HAMLET

Hamlet, which was probably written in 1600, belongs to the mature phase of Shakespeare's literary production. The sources of this play can be traced back to Scandinavian oral tradition.

The play is set in Denmark at Elsinore castle where the King, prince Hamlet's father, has recently died. In the opening scene we are informed that a ghost, who is very similar to the dead king, has appeared to two sentinels, who decide to inform Hamlet.
Hamlet is deeply upset by his father's death and his mother's hasty marriage with Claudius.
After hearing of the ghost, he decide to meet him.
The spectre appears and reveals to Hamlet that he was poisoned by Claudius and asked Hamlet to revenge his death.
The prince, shocked, decides to feign madness to find out the truth and to call a group of actors to perform a scene very similar to the circumstances of his father's death.
When Claudius sees the scene reproducing the murder, he stops the play and goes out.
Now Hamlet is sure that the ghost's words were true, and the king orders him to go to England.
As a consequence of Hamlet's cruel treatment, Ophelia, the young woman he is in love with, goes mad and dies.
Hamlet wants to return to Denmark for Ophelia's funeral.
Claudius wants to poison Hamlet, but the queen drinks from the poisoned cup and dies.
When Hamlet understands the truth, he kills Claudius and dies.
